Points of Interest: Scunthorpe

As the largest steel processing centre in the United Kingdom, Scunthorpe is rightfully known as the UK's ‘Industrial Garden Town’. It's the third largest settlement in Lincolnshire after Grimsby and Lincoln, and there's a fascinating hint of history in the ending of the name – Thorpe means new village in Norse, showing us Scunthorpe's history as a Viking settlement.

The 1914-18 War produced an even greater expansion because of the demand for steel which had first been made locally in 1890. By 1919 there were three major firms operating in Scunthorpe and modernisation and expansion of output were to continue up to 1974.

Scunthorpe was able, as the largest town in the area, to obtain control over various developments. Education, more normally the business of the county, under Excepted District status saw first the development of grammar and secondary schools and then in 1968 reorganisation on comprehensive lines.

Today, Scunthorpe is a great UK location that has plenty on offer for the family and the parents that take care of them!

Attractions like the North Lincolnshire Museum are a firm favourite with locals and visitors, and nature fanatics are well served by the beautiful views available at the Ashby Ville Nature Reserve. Gigs and pantos are a staple also of Baths Hall, well situated for adults next to a string of bars and pubs for a little nightlife fun.

We're proud to become a part of the area with our Everyday Loans branch!
