Five of our favourite ways to make sure that hearts and budgets aren’t broken this Valentine’s Day

For many it’s the most romantic day of the year – the perfect opportunity to show our loved ones just how much they mean to us.

But it’s important to remember that you don’t have to splash lots of cash in the name of true love. In fact, we think that some clever cost-effective creativity can say much more.  So, in the name of love and thriftiness, here are our top five tips to a purse and wallet-friendly Valentine’s Day. Don’t forget, it’s the thought that counts.


  1. Eat out for less

Let’s not be embarrassed to use discount codes and money-off vouchers when eating out this Valentine’s Day. There are so many delicious deals out there, it would be silly not to save.

Some of our top picks include Las Iguanas restaurants offering a free glass of Cava for you and your loved one if you book a table for February 14th.

Forget any other fizzy wine over at Cafe Rouge. Here diners will get a free glass of Champagne thrown in with the £24.95 three-course menu that’s available from 9th to 17th February.

  1. Stay in for even less

If you could cringe at the thought of all those loved-up couples dining out on Valentine’s Day, there are lots of delicious meal deals and dine-in dinners that can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home.

They’re a top choice if no one wants to take on any cooking duties. And for those of us with kids, they also cut out the additional cost of a babysitter.

In store from 12th February, Aldi is offering customers a mix-and-match approach to building their Valentine’s menu with a range of luxury special buys – offering a main, side and dessert from just under £7.

Asda has also rustled up a magnificent meal offer this year – with a starter, main course, two sides, dessert and drink for £15, which is about the same price as a bottle of wine at the pub.

And we can’t possibly not mention the most famous meal deal of all from Marks and Spencer – its best yet, according to some very reliable sources – promising that shoppers can ‘tuck into restaurant quality food’ from the comfort of their own home. For just £20 you can enjoy a starter, main, side, dessert, a bottle of fizz and box of chocolates.


  1. Don’t say it with overpriced flowers

Don’t be duped into buying overpriced flowers on the 14th of February. Supermarkets are selling roses for as little as £2 for a bunch of 12, or bigger bouquets from £20 so there are some savings to be had.

The cheapest deal on roses include Aldi’s 12 for £2. Available as mixed colours or all red, they’ll be in store from February 3rd. Morrisons is selling a single red rose for £2 or a bunch of 12 for £5, and they’ll be available in stores from February 11. And Asda will have a bunch of 12 red roses on sale for £5 from February 11th.


  1. Love don’t cost a thing

In the words of Jennifer Lopez, “love don’t cost a thing”. There are lots of loving little ways that you can show your other half just how much you care, and they don’t cost a penny.

Make a simple yet loving statement by lighting candles, preparing a surprise breakfast in bed – bonus points for serving up something heart shaped – or make a collage from those important moments in your relationship.

Or why not give the gift of handmade love coupons – for a massage or movie night, for example that can be redeemed whenever they want?


  1. It’s the little things…

Often, it’s the smallest of gestures that are the biggest hit on Valentine’s Day.

One of our favourites so far this year is Krispy Kreme’s brand-new Conversation range for Valentine’s Day. With all the deliciousness that you’d expect from the doughnut purveyor, they feature messages such as “Be Mine,” “All the Feels,” and “DM Me.” Better still, you can buy one get one free on Tuesday 5th February only.
