Points of Interest: Slough
Slough has long been a busy and bustling city in the South East region. Home to a population of more than 160,000 people, it’s fast become a central location for many businesses and the families that support them.
Interestingly, the name Slough used to be spelt Slo, meaning soil. From what we know, Slo – in 1195 no less! – was named after a small hamlet located between Upton and Chalvey. In time, Slough’s unique location became a boon for transport, with many inns and amenities opening to accommodate the increasingly prevalent stagecoach.
What many might not know about Slough in the modern day is that it’s home to no less than 96 listed buildings! These vary from St Laurence’s Church and Godolphin Court all the way through to the Ostrich Inn and King John’s Palace.
There’s more than a little to do in the area. Windsor Castle is a phenomenal staple located only a couple of miles from the city, and further stunning locations include the Black Park and the Theatre Royal.
In 2019, Slough is a business hub, with key industries like the motor trade being flagship examples of the size and scale of investment made in the city by large organisations over the years. Further examples of businesses local to the area are O2, Nintendo, and Blackberry, who all share offices or headquarters around the wider Slough region.
We are proud to become part of the area with our Everyday Loans branch!
