Points of Interest: Leicester
Leicester currently stands as the second largest urban area in the East Midlands region. Unlike most UK cities, Leicester has retained an excellent record of its past through its architecture and the buildings that still stand today.
Several Roman pavements and baths remain in Leicester, principally from its ancient settlement as a Roman outpost. Its name is also derived from the old language meaning “camp of the dwellers of the river Legro”. Other notable features in the area include Leicester’s Botanic Gardens – a great meeting point for both students and residents.
Leicester is both a cosmopolitan city and an area rich in ancient history and various cultures. The region even boasts exciting connections to King Richard III. From shopping to dining to heritage and entertainment, the locals never get bored, as there are so many new and exciting things to discover.
The city’s history stretches back some 2000 years, yet despite this, it’s also home to a modern façade and houses a number of state-of-the-art and award-winning venues, including the likes of the Curve, the National Space Centre and Highcross Shopping Centre.
Due to a busy calendar of events, as well as a range of museums and art galleries, Leicester’s residents always find themselves entertained. Even though it is undoubtedly a modern city, there are also a handful of green spaces and areas of natural beauty, which are ideal on a sunny day.
Set right in the centre of one of England’s most picturesque counties, many of the locals will retreat to the surrounding villages and countryside when the summer holidays arrive, all of which are easy to reach and explore. Its central location is also an asset to those who commute to and from London on a regular basis, as the train just takes 62 minutes to reach the capital city.
