Points of Interest: Leeds
The city of Leeds was initially a township in the ancient parish of Leeds St Peter. However, in the 16th century, the citizens petitioned the king to incorporate the entire parish and all eleven townships nearby as the Borough of Leeds. The Municipal Corporations Act again reformed this borough in 1835. The city handled one sixth of all England’s export trade in 1770, using buildings such as the celebrated White Cloth Hall.
Leeds is both a vibrant and energetic city and one that is adored by the locals. A number of the area’s many attractions, including the region’s fashion boutiques, high street shops, museums and landmarks, are all just a stroll away from the city centre.
Other areas of interest include the region’s many museums, niche galleries, high-end restaurants and iconic bars.
The city is a great place to shop for an array of designer names and unique brands – possibly one of the reasons the locals appear so well-dressed. From the many markets to the independent boutiques and high street chains, there are various shopping quarters to choose from.
From the various historic houses, including that of Harewood House and Gardens, to the Thackray Museum, which tells an interesting story of medicine from a site that used to be a former hospital, culture is big in Leeds and residents are able to take their pick when it comes to viewing an array of exhibitions and displays.
Many parents will take their children to Tropical World on both the weekends and throughout the school holidays. This particular venue houses a range of exotic animals, comprising meerkats, bats, butterflies and crocodiles – all of which sit in surroundings resembling their natural habitat.
Another popular attraction in the Leeds area comes in the shape of the Leeds Industrial Museum and Armley Mills – a former wooden mill and one of the largest of its type.
